As part of the Massachusetts Vehicle Check program, all vehicles registered in the state must pass a safety inspection every year.

Here are some of the aspects of your vehicle that you can expect to be covered during one of these inspections:

• Emissions. The emissions test determines whether or not a vehicle’s engine and emission control system are working properly. An efficient vehicle releases less pollutants into the air. It also keeps your fuel economy in check. 
   
• Lights. The taillights, brake lights, turn signals, headlights, and high beams will all be checked to ensure you’re able to see and be seen during your time on the road.
   
• Brakes. It’s no secret that the brake system is an important part of any car’s operation. During the brake inspection, the brake pads are checked to make sure they’re not worn down too far, and the brakes are tested to see that they’re working correctly.
   
• Tires. When the technicians examine your tires, they’re looking to see that all four are the same size. Tread depth will also be checked to ensure that the tires are able to provide you with the necessary support. The tires will then be rotated to promote healthy aging through balanced wear and tear across their surfaces.
   
• Other items. Apart from the systems and elements mentioned above, an inspection will also include an examination of the windows and windshield for chips and cracks, as well as the steering and the suspension. Finally, your vehicle will be given a once-over for any signs of fluid leaks.
