Before attempting to jump-start a car, ensure you have the right tools on hand. You'll need a set of jumper cables and another functioning vehicle. Make sure both cars are parked close enough for the jumper cables to reach between their batteries.

Pop the hoods of both cars and locate the batteries. Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on each battery. The positive terminal is usually red, and the negative terminal is black. It's crucial to understand this distinction to avoid any mishaps during the process.

Take the jumper cables and connect one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the functioning battery. Next, connect one black clamp to the negative terminal of the functioning battery. Instead of connecting the other black clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery, find a bare metal surface on the car's engine or frame. This helps minimize the risk of sparks near the battery.

Once the cables are securely connected, start the engine of the functioning vehicle. Let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery. This step is crucial in ensuring a successful jump-start.

After running the functioning vehicle for a few minutes, try to start the car with the dead battery. If it starts successfully, leave both vehicles running for a few more minutes to allow the charged battery to transfer energy to the dead one.

Now that the dead vehicle is running, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order. Start by removing the black clamp from the bare metal surface, then detach the black clamp from the functioning battery's negative terminal. Next, remove the red clamp from the functioning battery's positive terminal, and finally, disconnect the red clamp from the positive terminal of the previously dead battery.
