WHAT ARE BRAKE PADS?
When you press down on the pedal to slow down the car, the brake pad is what contacts and applies pressure to the brake rotors. The friction that’s applied to the rotors is what slows down and stops the wheels, which then stops the vehicle from moving.
Brake pads undergo a great deal of stress every time you slow down or come to a stop. This is in part due to how fast an automobile’s wheels rotate, as well as how much a standard truck or car weighs. The pads have to squeeze down on a quickly spinning metal disc repeatedly for thousands of miles. So, they’ll wear down over time. When that happens, they’ll have to get replaced before they cause serious damage to the rotors.
TYPES OF BRAKE PADS
If your brakes pads need to be replaced, there are several you can choose from.
Organic brake pads are composed of various materials, like glass, fiber, rubber, carbon, and Kevlar. They’re soft, quiet, and easy on brake rotors. They also don’t produce much dust, are inexpensive, and are great for everyday driving.
However, they only operate well within a pretty limited temperature range. Plus, they can wear out quickly compared to other types of brake pads.
Semi-metallic pads have between 30% and 65% of metal by weight, such as steel, iron, and copper. They provide greater braking performance than organic pads. They also perform better in more extreme temperatures.
They’re much noisier than organic pads, produce a great deal of dust, and will wear out the brake rotors more quickly.
Ceramic brake pads are made with a dense ceramic material with embedded copper fibers. They’re very quiet and last longer than organic or semi-metallic pads.
However, they’re the most expensive brake pad type. Plus, they don’t produce as much cold bite as a semi-metallic pad, which means they may not be ideal for extremely cold environments.
WHAT ARE BRAKE ROTORS?
Like we mentioned above, the brake rotors are what the pads clamp down on to stop a vehicle’s wheels from spinning. The design of the rotors lets the heat produced by this process to evenly disperse throughout the braking system, so that the system won’t overheat.
Over time, the brake pads will begin to wear down. If the thickness gets under a quarter of an inch, they’ll have to get replaced. Otherwise, you could experience any of the following warnings signs:
• Hearing a high-pitched squealing
• Vehicle pulling to one side
• Feeling vibrations when pressing down on the brake pads
These warning signs can indicate damage to the rotors. So, if you ignore them, the rotor could become so damaged that it’ll compromise the braking system, making it unsafe to drive your car. At this point, your only solution is to replace the rotors, which can be costly.
